Literature Text

Once I had a bunch of grapes
They were purple like the jewels of a crown
Once I had a head of lettuce
It sparkled like a king's garments
Once I had a pot of honey
Draped over hot bread like a golden necklace
To a hungry child
These things are priceless treasures
This is an imaginary song I made up for two of my characters, a 13-year-old girl and her 2-year-old "son" (adopted) living in a fallen city under seige by monsters. At one point a group of humans attempts to trap her by luring her with fresh fruits and vegetables, things that are very rare in the city where food supplies have been cut off since the start of the invasion. She doesn't fall for the trap but tracks down the humans and steals the food when they're not paying attention, leaving a trap of her own in its place. She then returns to her hideout to hold a feast with her son and her lover, giving her son his first taste of these foods.

Although I have never been truly starving, I have encountered times of hunger more than once in my life and I am grateful to the gods for every good meal I can enjoy. People take things like good food too much for granted, and they are too quick to criticize people for a poor diet when those same people can't afford to eat anything else.
